Normothermia Guidelines

NICE Normothermia Guidelines

The National Institue for Clinical Excellence issue guidelines on best clinical practice.

Recommendations for Normothermia include:

Preoperative warming should be carried out on the ward, the Surgical Admissions Unit or the anaesthetic room.
Intraoperative warming should be carried out on patients having anaesthesia for 30 minutes or more.
Postoperative warming should be carried out when needed and to ensure that patients are kept above 36 degrees celsius.

Hot Dog conductive polymer warming is particularly suited to this. Hot Dog is:

Greener than forced air - uses 20% of the power of forced air and no disposables

Forced Air Warming Disrupts Laminar Air Flow...

Within Laminar Flow, all air moves downwards, creating a sterile field over the surgical patient.

With the Forced Air Heater 'Off', the waste air is pushed down to the floor and out the vents by the Laminar Flow.

However, with the Forced Air Heater 'On', the warm air overpowers the downward air in the Laminar Flow, destroying its effectiveness. In a video obtainable from us, it is clearly demonstrated that waste heat from Forced Air Blankets rises along the sides of the table and over the sterile field.

The waste heat actually follows the contours of the surgeon's body. This explains why surgeons complain of feeling hot. Furthermore, surgeons' arm movements can literally throw the dirty air into the ultra-clean surgical site.
