Normothermia Guidelines

NICE Normothermia Guidelines

The National Institue for Clinical Excellence issue guidelines on best clinical practice.

Recommendations for Normothermia include:

  • Preoperative warming should be carried out on the ward, the Surgical Admissions Unit or the anaesthetic room.
  • Intraoperative warming should be carried out on patients having anaesthesia for 30 minutes or more.
  • Postoperative warming should be carried out when needed and to ensure that patients are kept above 36 degrees celsius.

Hot Dog conductive polymer warming is particularly suited to this. Hot Dog is:

  • Cheaper than forced air - up to 70%
  • Cleaner than forced air - try cleaning your blower or hose
  • Greener than forced air - uses 20% of the power of forced air and no disposables

Hot Dog helps with

  • Less risk of infection
  • Better wound healing
  • Less risk of pressure ulcers that can happen when you are immobile
  • Less risk of DVT
  • More comfort post-operatively
  • Quicker return to 'normal' life
